Chapter 16

Gideon pours himself several fingers of my finest scotch without even asking. It’s a testament to how close we are that I’m not even annoyed.

At least how close we are now. There was a moment right after the first break-in at his house when he suspected one of us of being the culprit. It’s the same direction I would have gone in his situation, but I was a touched pissed anyway. We were supposed to be brothers, or even closer than. Certainly I feel closer to Gideon than I ever did to my own piece of shit biological brother. So yeah, I was miffed when Gideon assumed I might be behind it.

Turns out that the real culprit was the best friend we thought we’d killed five years ago along with our mentor. Surprise.

“Make yourself at home,” I say.

“I will.” Gideon tosses himself into a chair. “Gage called me today.”

“And?”

“He’s not happy about your bringing in the translator.”

I’m not happy that Gage is bringing this up with Gideon. “He should stick to his job and leave me to mine. How’s the search going for this mystery woman anyway?”

Gideon’s mouth twists. “About as well as your translation job is. Which is to say we’re going nowhere fast.”

“You think I can’t do it,” I say quietly. “That I was wrong to bring in Zara.”

Gideon shakes his head tiredly. “I’m not worried about you. You never get caught up in anything, much less a woman. If you think she can handle it, then she can. It’s not like your judgment is clouded.”

Right. I’m cool and levelheaded, like always. I pick up a pen and start to spin it, needing to do something with my hands. Zara would probably turn her nose up at it—not fancy enough for her and the ink is plain black, not some shimmering peacock blue. “If I’m right, we can have the notebooks decoded soon. And then we can move against Oscar.”

I’m still not sure what that will look like though. I’m beginning to think we’ll never have enough to go to law enforcement with, which means we’ll have to deal with him ourselves. Do we dismantle the company he and Ira built, tear down what’s left of his fortune? It would leave Oscar with nothing, but it would also destroy what’s left of Ira’s legacy.

We could go even darker and give him the same thing he gave to Ira—a sudden, shocking death. He tried to do the same to Cassian, so he definitely deserves it.

But we’re not murderers. We thought we were for years and when we found out we weren’t… I don’t want to live with that kind of burden again. Even if it would be justified.

“You sound upset about that,” Gideon says.

I look up. “Well, all the options around Oscar are bad ones.”

“No,” he says. “I meant finishing the notebooks.” He frowns, realization coming over his expression. “Oh shit. That rumor I heard, about you and the translator in the lab… It’s true.”

I rear back. “Jesus Christ, who told you about that?”

“Morgan.
