The ceremony began in the afternoon, though preparations had already been going on for several hours by then. Conor had been too caught up in various other activities to dwell on Lyndor’s coldness to him that morning. First, servants had arrived after he had breakfasted and had taken him at once to be groomed for the ceremony. After another scented bath, they even trimmed his hair and spent far more time than Conor was comfortable with combing it out with a silver brush. Afterward, they replaced his simple wraparound garment with sleek green leggings and a wide-sleeved tunic fashioned of soft white cloth, and secured with a wide gold sash. While they dressed him, they taught him the formal vows that would bind him to Lyndor for the rest of his life.

Attired and ready, he was escorted to a small curtained balcony overlooking the Great Hall and left alone except for the ever-present Bessel. Trying not to sweat into his fresh new garments, Conor parted the curtain and leaned forward until he could peer down into the Hall. His pulse quickened when he saw the scene spread out below.

Lyndor’s entire court, it seemed, had turned up to witness their joining. All of them had donned their finest garments, so that the hall glittered with metallic thread and polished armor. Conor’s father, Blaik, and Malachus occupied places of raised seats close to the front, though he saw no sign of Lyndor’s cousin Gothec or Acolyte Wymreth. He spotted Solen on a bench in the middle of the room, attired today in a simple red tunic and a brown cloak. Most of the lords around him kept their distance, fearing either him or any perceived association with him.

How different his life would be in a few short hours, Conor thought. The shudder that ran through his body was not entirely the result of worry, though. He had managed to convince himself that Lyndor’s chilly behavior was the result of anxiety over the impending ceremony, coupled with suppressed grief over the old king’s recent death and Solen’s sudden appearance. Blaik’s original plan still struck him as serviceable, provided he approached the king in the right way and at the proper time. That time, he had decided, was after the joining was complete. Lyndor would be more secure and relaxed, Solen would be unable to interfere with their plans, and their consummation would be officially sanctioned and expected. Already he looked forward to putting a few of Blaik’s ideas into practice.

He was mentally rehearsing some of the naughtier suggestions he planned to make when someone rapped on the door behind him. Conor jumped and let the curtain fall back into place as Bessel moved to admit the visitor. A moment later Lord Gothec stepped into the room, looking every bit as nervous as Conor himself felt.

“It is time,” he said. “Are you ready?”

Suddenly unable to speak, Conor nodded. Gothec gestured for him to come forward and then fell into step behind him.
