Creating Archives

Archiving is the process of creating a single file that contains one or more compressed files or folders. The most common archive is the ZIP (.zip) format. There are other archiving formats such as Stuffit (.sitx) and tar (.tar and .tar.gz). They are not as commonly used as the ZIP format and can create compatibility issues if software to open the archives is not installed. The ZIP format is natively supported on OS X and the various versions of the Windows operating system. Archives can be extremely useful in backing up information, but they can also be useful when sending a group of files or folders to clients. Your various music files can be compressed into a single file that greatly simplifies sending musical ideas and mockups to clients.

Navigate to your desktop and control-click (or right-click if you have a two-button mouse) on the “revisions” folder that was created previously. Choose Compress “revisions.”

Once the archiving process has completed, you will notice that a file named “revisions.zip” now appears on your desktop. The “revisions” folder was zipped into a single file. There are several benefits to this archive:

• The files in the “revisions” folder are now flattened into a single file and, as a result, are much easier to send.

• The folder and its nested files have been compressed so they occupy less space on the hard drive.

• A fresh copy of the “revisions” folder can by created by double-clicking on the archive. Think of the archive as a blueprint that can create new instances of the compressed file or folder. In other words, it is possible to create fresh copies of your archived files simply by opening the archive on your computer.
