âSitulogy is the transformative morphology of the uniqueâ1
An attack on a âcentral perspective of timeâ
The triolectic diagrams represent Jornâs second attempt to draw his philosophical method. The first, in the spiral drawings, was probably abandoned because he could find no way of establishing a connection between the individual spirals. The triolectic diagrams appear just as isolated, but Jornâs discovery of topology, during his search for insights from science and mathematics to further his artistic endeavours, led him to see that each triangle was a representative of an infinite series, the members of which grew out of and fell back into each other. Jornâs statement that he was âaiming at a polydimensional cosmos at the surfaceâ applies just as much to his triolectic writings as to his painting.2
The effectiveness of the triolectic method lies in its facilitation of transformations. Jorn perceives that this ability to cross conceptual boundaries, to open up new areas by the use of analogy, homology and correspondence, even of metaphor, is itself analogous to the principles of homeomorphic topology. His first fumbling attempt in 1960 to use these principles âintuitivelyâ to differentiate between spontaneous situationist transformations in the present and the Franco-German Existentialist âsituationâ, where the present is always determined by the future (see 1:7 and 6:291, int. al. for Jornâs awareness of this),3 recognized the importance of including time as a dimension. Before his elaboration of triolectics, Jorn called this âsitugraphy or ⦠plastic geometryâ,4 and when applied to the situationist âsituationâ, it became a dialectic of opposed tendencies, the ludic, of art, or âthe creation of variabilities within a unityâ which necessarily comes first, and the analytical, of science, âthe search for unity amongst the variablesâ.5
A year later, Jorn returns to the theme in The Order of Nature with his triolectic method in place, and over some 20 pages develops a set of homeomorphic transformations to illustrate the scope of the idea. The approach is summed up in a triolectic, which could perhaps be called the situational or causal domain:
