Chapter Seven:
It wasn’t as bad as I had expected, but then again I had expected the worst. Most of the kids walking in were too busy talking to one another to notice Will and me, but there were definitely some glances our way.
One of Austin’s friends, Evan, saw us, and a dark look past over his face, but he didn’t say anything and looked away.
Will’s friend, Brice, saw us and came up to walk with us. I hadn’t really spoken to Brice before, as he was a year older and had never been in any of my classes.
“It’s Charlotte, right?” he said to me, and I nodded, looking at my shoes nervously. “Cool, nice to see you.” When I glanced up, Brice was exchanging a look with Will, but I couldn’t figure out what it meant because it disappeared in a second.
“You still on for shooting some hoops tonight, King?” Brice asked Will, who nodded. As we entered the main entrance, the two of them started veering off towards the senior locker bay, and I went the other way towards the juniors’.
I didn’t bother saying goodbye, figuring he was busy talking to his friend. But then I saw Will catching up to me from the corner of my eye, so I turned to look at him.
“Charlotte, wait up,” Will said. “I forgot to say earlier, well,” he paused looking kind of uncomfortable. “I just want you to know that you can stay over at my place anytime you want.” He glanced around the hallway nervously, as if he was scared who might overhear him. “I mean, you know, if you ever need to again.”
My face flushed. “Yeah, I get what you mean.” I took a deep breath. “If I’m ever having issues at home, I’ll totally find you again.” Rolling my eyes, I turned and walked away feeling ashamed, ashamed to be myself. I was Charlotte, the girl whose home life was a mess. The girl whose crush only talked to her because he pitied her.
Will probably was just trying to make up for the fact that he randomly walked out of our lives two years ago.
I walked to my locker bay and started spinning my combination, when a hand grabbed my shoulder and spun me around. It was Austin. His dark hair was astray, and his eyes were bloodshot. Had looked like he had escaped from an insane asylum.
“Austin!” I said, glancing around as people walked by. No one noticed us though.
“Money,” he whispered. “Do you have any money—”. I pushed off his hand and tried to get around him, but he put up an arm to stop me. He continued in his monotone voice. “I need it, Charlotte. I need it.”
“Austin, I don’t have any money on me,” I hissed, mad that he was dragging me into his problems. “Leave me alone.”
“Please, Charlotte, they’ll hurt me if I don’t give them the money.”
I didn’t know who he was talking about, but I attempted again to get past him. “Please, Austin.
