Graham Industries

‘What the hell do you mean, you had her and she got away?’ Al Graham’s spoke the words through gritted teeth down the phone to The Fox. ‘… no, you listen to me. I’m done listening to you. I want the location and all the information you have on Beth brought here and handed over personally. And I mean everything. I will handle the matter myself. You, my friend, will not be working this case anymore. It’s too important for mess-ups like that. You’d better be in my office at eight p.m. this evening, otherwise Beth won’t be the only one I’m after.’

Al slammed the phone receiver down with force and swore loudly.

‘Problem, boss?’ George’s no-nonsense tone drifted over from the doorway.

‘Probably. Organize a couple of guys and get the trace in on Mendino’s cell phone. I want to know where he is, where he’s been over the last couple of months, and who he’s been talking to. He had Beth today – and lost her. She’s not bright enough to get away from him under her own steam – she must have someone she’s working with. I need all the information, we’ll deal with this ourselves. She is not slipping away again, understand?’

‘I hear you, boss. Give me an hour. I’ll be back.’

Al nodded at George who silently left the room. Man’s built like a shithouse and moves like a panther. If he didn’t work for me, I’d be worried. Al was grateful to have George on his team – he was the one person Al knew would never be bought off or betray him. He’d worked for Al’s father before him – in the same line of business Al had been raised in. He knew all the ins and outs.

Al suddenly had the need to get out of the office. Grabbing his jacket from the back of his chair, he strode into the reception area. Marcia glanced up expectantly – she hadn’t been there long enough to understand anything about the business, and that was just how he liked it.

‘I’m going to pick Kim up and take her out for an early lunch – have George ring me when he gets back.’

‘No problem, Mr. Graham.’ Marcia turned her attention back to the computer screen and tapped on the keyboard.

Al didn’t know what she was doing – he hadn’t set her any tasks yet and knew she’d been up-to-date the day before when she’d left.

‘What’re you working on?’ He kept his suspicion in check as he spoke.

Marcia’s face reddened, and he waited for whatever lie would drip from her lips. She surprised him with her response, though.

‘I’m playing solitaire, see?’ She turned the screen a little so he could see the cards spread out. ‘Sorry, if you want me to stop, I will, it’s just you haven’t set me anything to do, and I finished yesterday’s stuff last night. I’m still answering the phones, and there’s a stack of filing coming in from the warehouse shortly. I was just passing time.
