Chapter Six

There was something to be said about a man who could make a good coffee. Personally, I’d always thought that I could never share a home with someone who didn’t have a proper appreciation for the heavenly brew. David had considered it passable, and in hindsight, that should have been my first clue that we weren’t meant to be.

Arden, however, seemed perfectly at ease in the kitchen. Not only had he prepared me a pot of delicious coffee, but now he was also busying himself with making us breakfast.

The werewolf hummed a cheerful melody under his breath as he flipped an omelet in the pan. It really smelled nice, but I was already eyeing the box of donuts tempting me. He’d gone to pick them up before I’d woken up, and they were patiently waiting to be eaten. However, Arden claimed that a man couldn’t survive on donuts and coffee. Of course, he’d been appalled at the sad state of my refrigerator and had in fact shopped for groceries during his outing as well. I’d tried to protest, and he’d then pointed out that he planned to put me to quite a workout later and I needed to eat. The heated look in his gaze as he’d spoken had convinced me to agree, and just the memory of it kept me on my seat and sipping my coffee while he worked.

When Arden finished with our omelets, he turned toward me. A thought flashed through my mind that he looked yummier than the lovely omelets he had cooked, which was quite a feat indeed. It was quickly followed by an even naughtier one, an image of him dressed solely in an apron and completely at my beck and call.

He slid the plate in front of me and arched a brow, having obviously detected something suspicious in my demeanor. “What?” he asked.

“Nothing,” I replied with fake nonchalance. “I was just thinking that you’re remarkably house trained. You’d make a wonderful pet.”

For a few seconds, he stared at me blank-faced and I almost thought I’d accidentally offended him through my remark. But then, his lips twisted in a wicked grin and he leaned closer to me over the kitchen counter. “Oh, baby.” He growled playfully. “I’ll be your pet any time you want, in bed and out of it.”

I was very tempted to take him up on his offer, but I enjoyed our banter too much to put a stop to it. “Down, boy,” I told him, spearing my omelet with a fork. “Bad. No treats for you.”

He snickered, but nevertheless backed away and focused on his own meal. We ate in companionable silence, something which was remarkable in itself. I didn’t remember the last time I’d shared such a moment with anyone. Had it been in high school, when I ate with my parents and Mackenzie? Possibly. David and I had always been busy with our careers, and we never had time to eat breakfast together because we had to go to…Work!

“Ah, fuck,” I cursed, dropping my fork as if it had burned me.
