Looking out over the Pacific, you can see the outline of the Channel Islands. Point Dume overlooks Zuma Beach as you look back. You will pass a couple of interpretive panels about tidepools as you approach the other side of the point above Dume State Beach.

At 0.5 mile you come to a junction. The trail on the left climbs to the summit and the California Registered Historical Landmark plaque. Bear right to continue the hike, but take time to go up this short spur for 360-degree views on your return. The backdrop of the Santa Monica Mountains and the national recreation area is photogenic. Just ahead along the trail is a staircase on the right leading down to Point Dume State Beach and a very attractive cove. Continue walking on the trail to complete the hike. The trail ends at Cliffside Drive, where there is a sign for the Point Dume Natural Preserve. Notice the California Coastal Trail wave logo at this trailhead. Walk back the way you came, and if time permits, walk down to Point Dume Beach for a stroll.
