The dentist grinned. “And what happens if they invade?”

“They eat your brains, of course.” Charlie"s voice sounded

dreamy. He was still talking about plants when they began

intravenous fluids and Charlie"s voice started to drift.

Devon stroked the boy"s head as Charlie tried to finish his

sentence.

“You don"t have to stay,” his mother said, when Charlie was

ready for his procedure.

Devon was aghast. “Of course I have to stay. I want to stay.

She gave him a grateful smile and sat on a chair against the

wall. It wasn"t until Charlie had been fitted with braces and was

coming out of his light anesthesia that Devon realized he"d spent

so much time focusing on his small patient that he"d forgotten to

greet the dentist. He hadn"t even introduced himself!

“I"m so sorry,” he said, reaching across the still dozing Charlie

to shake the man"s hand. “I didn"t even tell you who I was.”

“I"m Joe Rivers, and don"t worry. The way you concentrated

on our patient told me exactly who you are. Welcome to our

military family.”
