Eating droppings (caecotrophy)
Rabbits produce two types of droppings. You may see a rabbit eating softer droppings – caecotrophs – directly from their bottom. Eating these is an essential part of a rabbit’s diet because it helps them to get as much goodness as possible from their food. Your rabbit will also produce waste in the form of hard droppings.
Weight watch
It is a good idea to note your rabbits’ weight regularly and keep a careful eye on it. Remember that the majority of your pets’ diet should be made up by hay and/or grass. You can help your rabbits to maintain a healthy weight by limiting treats – especially sweet ones such as apple and carrot – and ensuring that they are not over-fed on nuggets. Monitor your rabbits’ weight and, if necessary, adjust the amount that you are feeding them. It is important to remember that young rabbits and pregnant and nursing females will have different needs to other rabbits. Ask your vet for advice on how to give them a balanced diet and if you need to adjust their food to help them to achieve a healthy weight.
