SHIFTING BACK usually happened in his sleep, and Shane awoke to the sore muscles that told him he’d changed. His skin was grated and raw, like a really bad sunburn. It was the fast regrowth that made it hurt. Even his scalp ached and he could feel his hair shaggy around his ears again. He was lying on a bathroom floor, cold tile carving lines into his back—and Aki sprawled naked atop him. What the hell?

He sat up, dislodging Aki but grabbed a hold of him to check for injuries. Aki blinked sleepy eyes at him. “Can we go back to bed now, Shane?” Aki grumbled. “You move too much when you’re a wolf.”

Aki didn’t look hurt. There was no blood anywhere on him or even signs of a healing wound. Just two feet from him over a large floor grate lay chunks of discarded clothing and flesh. The stench nearly made Shane vomit. The closed door brought the realization down hard on Shane. Aki had been in the bathroom with him the whole time while he changed. He could have been hurt, or killed. Shane could have eaten him.

His stomach was growling something fierce so Shane knew he hadn’t eaten. Oh fuck. “Aki, what did you do?” He lifted Aki out of his lap and opened the bathroom door, not locked, just closed so his wolf self couldn’t get out. Fuck, fuck, fuck.

Aki stretched and got up, heading out the door, perfectly comfortable without a stitch of clothing on, even though that tight little heart-shaped ass sprung Shane every time. “I’ll call for food. We can nibble and sleep some more. You were up most of the night. I had to keep turning the water on when your fever went up. At least you throw off more heat than a furnace.” Aki shivered. “I hate being cold.”

“Aki, what….” Fuck! “You can’t be around me when I change. I could hurt you.”

Aki threw him a look that said “yeah right.” “I’m around you all the time when you change. At home or here. Doesn’t matter. You won’t hurt me.”

“You don’t know that.” Shane struggled to breathe. What if he’d woken up with Aki dead in his arms? Mauled by his beast, or worse, chunks of him missing and his stomach full. “I’m an animal, Aki. Don’t you get it?”

Aki stretched up and wrapped his arms around Shane’s neck drawing him in for a kiss. There was no lingering taste of blood in Shane’s mouth, just Aki’s sweetness. Aki pulled away and went to a small com screen beside the bed. “You’re not hot anymore, so I think your fever is over. I should call Dr. Vitoric.” Shane stood in the center of the room, staring at Aki as he drew on a robe and found one for Shane as well. “Someone will be here in a minute to change the sheets and test you for the virus again.”

Shane swallowed back a gulp, remembering how bad off Jack had been. “I got the virus?”

“Yes, but I think you might be okay now.
