Chapter 21

Roman

A week had passed since my close encounter with the hunter in the woods, and Umber was mostly recovered. He and Damien were a little more laid back around me, now that I’d proven myself useful in a fight, but Gabriel remained as elusive as ever. From what everyone told me, that wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. Ashton was the only one who saw him on a regular basis.

To my relief, Damien hadn’t mentioned anything about my relationship with Jake since he’d confronted me in the hall. To be fair, I hadn’t given him reason to mention it. I spoke to the omega as pack decorum required when we passed each other, but I’d avoided his attempts to explain away the truth about his mating.

He claimed the other alpha meant nothing, but how was I supposed to believe him when he’d lied to me from the beginning? I’d been honest with him from the start, which made it sting all the more.

At least there was plenty of work to keep me distracted. And without one distraction in particular, I could focus on what should have been my only goal from the start: revenge.

I wouldn’t get sidetracked again. Lesson learned.

That afternoon, I was out on patrol with Damien. They never sent me out alone, but the last time I’d spoken with Jason, he’d commented that he would be sending me into battle soon. The sooner, the better. It was time to face my brother once and for all. Then I could see to the rest.

Damien was good company. The older alpha didn’t say much, and when he did, it was carefully thought out. He was serious, but it was refreshing in the face of all the boisterous alphas around me. He and Umber were the only two who could have fit in with my pack, and over the last couple of weeks, I was sure I’d gained a fraction of their trust.

That was exactly what I’d set out to do, and yet when I thought about the fact that one day soon, I would betray that trust, it brought me anything but peace. Despite my best attempts to shut down whatever it was that Jake had awakened, it seemed there were lingering effects, whether I kept the beguiling omega at arm’s length or not.

By the time my plan went into action, at least Jake would already be safe in his new pack. And in the arms of the alpha he’d been promised to. If I lingered on the thought too long, I saw red, so I pushed it away like everything else.

“So,” Damien said, interrupting the companionable silence I would have greatly preferred to keep going. “Have you given any thought to what we talked about earlier?”

I ran back through all our recent conversations, but the only one I could think of that hadn’t ended with closure was the one about Jake. Why he was bringing it up now was beyond me. “I haven’t touched him since,” I said, fighting the urge to tell him to mind his own business.
