Chapter 7 - Mason

The days following Devon’s appearance in the shop were a chocolate-scented frenzy. Daniel almost exclusively manned the front while Andrew became my right-hand-man in the back, demonstrating skill in the kitchen and process that I hadn’t expected.

Soon we’d worked out a good rhythm, him prepping nuts, dried fruits and other toppings or fillings while I did the chocolate side of the work. In those times when I needed to prep, such as with toffees and caramels, he’d take the cooled pieces and package them or add them to trays to send to the front.

And the front was busy. It was all we could do to keep up as we prepped both the preorders and made sure that Daniel had candy to sell.

Valentine’s Day was only a few days away, and those people who wanted to stay out of the doghouse were scrambling to ensure that they picked up the tastiest treats for their partners or those they wanted to impress.

“Hey guys,” Daniel called from the open arch between the front and back. “Need more choco strawberries. We’re down to under two dozen.”

I turned to Andrew. “Think you can dip them?”

He nodded. “I can try.”

I smiled. “Great. I’ll let you do the simple ones, and I’ll do the decoratives.”

“You got it,” he replied as he rushed off to wash and dry the berries while I prepped the chocolates.

My guys were definitely getting a bonus after all the hard work and overtime they’d put in.

I watched Andrew dip a few of the giant strawberries we used, then once I was satisfied that he could handle the plain ones I got to work on the fancier ones. The trays filled fast with us both working, which also gave me a chance to estimate how much time it would take us to fill the Valentine’s Day orders.

When Andrew whisked the trays away to let the chocolate harden I knew that I had to keep him, if he was interested. I’d even help to pay for his culinary classes if it meant having him as an extra hand.

I was prepping for a batch of dark chocolate sea salt caramels when I heard a knock on the back door. I walked over and opened it.

“Mason!” another omega, Gene, cried. Tear tracks stained his face and he looked exhausted.

“Gene! Come in,” I said, pulling him to a stool near the door. “What’s wrong?”

“It’s gone Mace!” he wailed.

“What’s gone?”

I noticed Andrew watching, but staying politely away. He made a show of starting to prep boxes.

Gene wiped his hands across his face. “My new cooler. It’s gone, completely destroyed.”

The blood drained from my face. Gene had taken over the local florist around the same time I opened Mount Chocolate. He’d made do with the coolers inside for a couple years, but it always limited his stock. He’d finally saved up for a large, outdoor, walk-in cooler the year before and had told me that the extra space allowed him to take twice as many orders for bouquets than he had in the past.
