ANJULIE LEANED BACK IN HER chair, kicking the edge of her boot heel restlessly against the underside of her desk and just staring at the dark square her cellphone made atop the blotter and messy papers scattered about.
So Lucas Aleks was somehow tied to the case her problem children were working in Los Angeles.
At least they’d kept her in the fucking loop this time.
Strange, how these things always came full circle.
No…not so strange at all.
Everything was so often interconnected, she thought. So often tangled by the strangest threads; pull one, and a million others came unraveled.
How close, then, were her threads to coming unraveled?
And who would they pull down with her, when they were done and she was a mess on the floor?
She couldn’t be thinking about this right now. She had too many other things to worry about, including bearding that goddamned dragon downstairs. She pinched the bridge of her nose, then punched the speaker, then the auto-dial on her desk phone, and waited.
After a few moments the line picked up, ringing three times before the sound was replaced by a click, and then the strange hollow sound of empty air in a large space when the other person was on speaker, too.
And that hollowness resonated in a sharp, peevish “What?” that carried with it the after-impression of a voice bouncing off metallic walls.
Anjulie arched a brow, steepling her fingers and spinning in her chair to stare at the phone. “Don’t you ‘what’ me, you miniaturized Rottweiler.”
Dr. Cara Stenson snorted. “Remember Rottweilers only bite when provoked,” she bit off. “Look. I’m elbows-deep in the stomach cavity of a body that’s been decaying in swamp water for two fucking weeks, and let me tell you, there is nothing that will completely block or mask this smell, so since I would like to stop chatting and be done with this, I’ll ‘what’ you all I want, darling captain. Now,” Sten finished, “what the hell do you want?”
Anjulie couldn’t help a laugh. God, Sten was a rude fuck when she was in a mood, but Anjulie always seemed to like rude people more.
Rude people were more honest.
And she was still grinning, tapping her fingertips together, as she said, “Just one thing. How do you feel about a day trip to Los Angeles?”
