Chapter Seven

Trey trembled. The bustle of the bar never bothered him, but now, all the customers were out to get him. He shivered as the room transformed and he walked into a den of vipers. These people weren’t his friends. Every time he leaned over to serve a drink, one of them could reach out and grab him. Byron pulled him closer.

“I’m here.” Byron rubbed his neck. “It’s okay.” He led Trey through the bar to the back office. It took a minute for his brain to catch up. He froze as Byron opened the office door.

Trey didn’t want to go back to Byron’s apartment. He’d been such a fool up there. The remnants of his shattered heart littered the floor.

“Come on,” Byron coaxed him like he was a five-year-old. Hell, most of Trey’s interactions or lack of interactions with others made him feel like a child.

“Kip?” Trey needed to get to Kip. “I have to see him.”

Byron grabbed his arm. “Thorne messaged me. He’s staying with Kip until tomorrow. Your friend is safe.”

“I should call him. What if he doesn’t trust Thorne? What if he tries to run away and comes looking for me? There’s danger on the street.” With each word, his voice got a little louder and a little shakier.

“Thorne would’ve told me if there was a problem. He’ll take care of Kip.”

“That makes sense. Thorne would call you if something happened.”

“Kip’s safe and you’re safe with me.”

“Byron, why were you by my place? Did you know I was in trouble?” That sounded stupid. Byron didn’t have superpowers. He was stronger and faster, but magic didn’t exist.

Byron gently wrapped his fingers around Trey’s wrist, forcing him to stop moving. The warmth and strength chased away the fear. He stopped shaking and looked into Byron’s blue eyes.

“Let’s go upstairs.” Slowly, Trey started to move. Byron tugged him forward. “Come on,” Byron said and Trey kept walking. They didn’t stop until the lift door whished closed. Trey jumped at the sound. Byron wrapped an arm around him. Hard muscles felt like a security blanket protecting him from the monsters.

“I must seem pretty pathetic.” How could he not? Walking across the bar suddenly became a chore.

Byron turned him so they were face-to-face. “How so?”

“Nothing happened and I’m shaking. All those people in the bar scare me.” Trey closed his eyes to escape Byron’s intensity. “You wouldn’t have been scared.”

“I was terrified,” Byron admitted.

Trey blinked his eyes open. “Why?”

“I thought I’d lose you. No matter what, I will keep you safe.”

The sincerity made him reach for Byron. “Thank you for saving me.” As the words left his mouth, Byron pushed him against the wall. Their bodies were inches apart. The fear melted away as awareness grew. This warrior was stronger than the men who chased him. But the danger inside of the lift could break his heart. Trey swallowed.

“I want to be yours.”

Byron’s eyes widened at his confession. Trey tried to move away. He already got his answer. Hearing it twice wouldn’t help.
