Declan

Lorenzo Ricci. My distaste for the man grew with every minute he remained breathing. There were still questions unanswered. But I had enough answers that confirmed Lorenzo had played more than one role at ending the life of my parents. It all came back to him.

If the part he played wasn’t enough, he’d still been the one to emotionally torture Lena the short time they were engaged. She’d have never made it to her wedding day, seeing that he’d torched Leoni’s restaurant, knowing she was inside. Based on what Lena had told me, Lorenzo had also been the one to take down Moretti. There had been rumors for years that he even killed his own father, staging it under the disguise of a deal gone wrong. I believed it. The rumor sounded all too familiar to what had happened to my father.

The man had no boundaries, no honor. He was loyal to nobody but himself.

Each strike I counted against Lorenzo made the itch to destroy him grow. Death almost seemed too simple, too lenient. He was the worst kind of evil that existed in our world. The man needed to pay, but nothing other than the power he held seemed to be important to him. So, I’d strip him of that, torture him until he begged me to kill him. Even then I would only allow him a slow painful death.

Francesca’s head lolled and fell against my shoulder, pulling me from my spiraling thoughts. A foreign feeling invaded my chest, a warmth that calmed the rage I usually felt. She’d fallen asleep on the plane the moment it ascended into the sky. I’d found a blanket in the cabin earlier and covered her.

Lorenzo had played as much of a part in ruining her life as mine—another strike. I wondered if she felt the same hatred toward him as I did. The idea of him haunted her in her sleep. It’d been restless. Even now, her body jerked from time to time. When she lightly whimpered, I found myself reaching to brush away the stray strands of hair stuck to her cheek.

Playing nice wasn’t something I did. Yet, I’d done it multiple times in the last forty-eight hours for this woman. Maybe it was because I could relate to her desperation for the answers she sought.

It wasn’t the only reason, though. There was no sense in lying to myself. The truth was this woman had gotten under my skin. Even with her incessant questioning. I wanted to shut her up more than once by simply pressing my mouth to hers and pushing my tongue down her throat. Every time she’d asked me a question, there was something in the way she looked at me that made me want to tell her everything. There was no judgement there, only curiosity. It was like a flame she couldn’t seem to extinguish.

Wrapping my arm around her, I tucked her into my side, securing her tightly against my body. In her sleep, she nuzzled against my chest.
