Donald Paul, a Franciscan friar, crafts his Friars’ Brewhouse beers in a converted hermitage on the western slope of Orcutt Mountain in Bucksport. He brews far less than his loyal customers and distributor demand, but he reminds them, “Patience is a virtue. Be virtuous.” A descendent of St. Arnulf of Metz, patron saint of brewers, Brother Paul is mashing malt for his Whoopie Pie Stout in this photograph.

Tiny Lubec Brewing opened in 2015, and soon after celebrated its one thousandth gallon of beer. That may seem modest to brewers who spill more than that daily, but brewer Gale White notes that on a one-barrel system in a town of 1,400 people, selling 1,000 gallons is a significant milestone. Here, Mike Scrivani and Tayla Greenier welcome a pirate invasion to promote Bailey’s Mistake Black Ale. (Courtesy of Lubec Brewing Company.)
