Wait! I’m not the enemy here! You have it all wrong!” Timir cried as Azeban raised his hatchet once again. “How do we know? Huh?” Azeban asked. “How do we know you didn’t bring the teapot here on purpose to destroy our village?”

“Because I didn’t, that’s why! Why would I do that?” Timir asked.

“I don’t know. In fact, I know very little about you, stranger. Including where your loyalties lie. And I won’t take the chance.”

“Okay, look, we were being chased by the Chenoo when we came here!” Timir yelled. “They are already in our realm too. Nigella and her little pets had us cornered. It was our only way to escape. That’s why we’re here.”

“Liar!” Azeban said.

“If this Malsumis gets that teapot, he destroys my realm too. End of. Whatever you think of me, we have the same enemy.”

Azeban thought about it.

“If that’s true, stranger, then we should both stand and fight him.”

“Okay. Great. Let’s just start with putting little Mr Hatchet away, shall we?” Timir said, slowly pushing the hatchet away from his jugular.

Azeban snatched it away and got off Timir.

“Then we ride for Mt. Katahdin. We position ourselves at the base. When Malsumis arrives, we raise our weapons, and show him the bravery and courage of a true Missisquoi warrior!” Azeban yelled, waving his hatchet in the air.

Timir looked around at the devastation around them. The area that had been flattened and covered in sand was at least a mile wide and had cut through the landscape like a giant razor, shaving the stubble of the land down to the skin.

“Right. Good plan, but quick question–how big is this Malsumis exactly?” Timir asked.

Meanwhile, Anibi drifted through the devastation of her former home in a daze. Everywhere lay bodies of people she had known, some well, others only slightly, but she recognised every face. These were people who would never be in her life again and she felt hollowed out, as though her heart had been left as barren and lifeless as this place.

Anibi wandered to the far corner of the camp, where broken splinters and debris were all that remained of the longhouse that she’d watched her father and the other elders build as a child. Nearby, lay the body of a warrior she had grown up with named Lobal, his spear still clutched in his right hand having defended their camp to his dying breath. She stooped to close his eyes out of respect, trying not to focus on his mouth which overflowed with the vile dust that covered everything here, and she realised Malsumis had taken more than just the people she’d known. He had taken her identity. For if she had no tribe, was she still a princess? Did it still matter that her father was the chief of the Missisquoi if the Missisquoi no longer existed? Or was she just a refugee now, forced to wander the world without a sense of place or purpose, living on the kindness of their former enemies? She wasn’t equipped for it.
