Chapter 19

The cashier counted out stacks of hundred-dollar bills. Hendrix hardly registered the total. What didn't fit in his wallet got snapped between the titanium jaws of his designer money clip.

Joss pinched Hendrix's elbow gently between his thumb and finger to guide Hendrix to the nearest bar. Two tall glass mugs of beer materialized in front of them.

“This is a joke, yeah?” Hendrix finally asked. “Of course, I remember Eli. How could I not remember Eli?”

“He was such a math nerd,” Joss said carefully. The intensity of Hendrix's reaction was making him cautious. “Who thought the math nerds would end up ruling the world?”

Two could be cagey. “Saw him the other day, as a matter of fact.”

“Doesn't surprise me.”

Hendrix stared at him. A sneaking suspicion had entered his mind. “Oh, yeah?”

Joss looked into his mug. Most of the beer was still there. “Well, yeah, all right. I got it from Dellia he was on the market. He's not wasting any time with the hookup sites either. No Grindr or Scruff, he's going right to the top.”

And how did Dellia know this stuff? The straight wife. Who'd been traveling around with the band and two babies. In Europe. Were getting Hendrix and Eli together the talk of the whole damn planet?

“Remember him from school?” my ass.

Joss, not Dellia, was the one who damn well remembered when Hendrix and Eli were an item. Joss, not Dellia, was the one who'd gone to the same prom where Hendrix and Eli had been the school's much fussed-over official gay sweethearts.

“Talk to me, man,” Hendrix said. “You all were gossiping about me, I get that much.”

“What can I say, bro?” Joss asked. “Models keep tabs on all the single rockstars and all the single billionaires too. Part of the job.”

Hendrix wasn't buying it. “Oh, don't try to put this on the wife, because I'm not buying that crap. It's you.”

Joss made his eyes big and innocent. “Me what?”

“Somebody heard Eli Feldstone was looking for love. Somebody figured he'd end up at Assured Elites. Somebody decided I was a gay celebrity in dire need of a match to settle down with, and wouldn't it be brilliant if I settled down with my old high school sweetheart who, oh, and just by the by, is also a famous billionaire.”

Joss decided this was a timely moment to focus on drinking his beer.

Hendrix drank his own beer.

“It isn't such a terrible idea.” A faintly defensive note entered Joss's voice. “They've matched tons of singers. Like, you know, Drew Angelson. And he's huge.”

“Yeah, but see... it wasn't my not-terrible idea. I'm a big boy now, bro.”

The bartender made their empty mugs vanish. Hendrix shook his head when the man started to pull a new draft. Mouthed the word, “Water.” He needed a very clear head for this conversation.

“So whose idea was it? Yours? Dellia's? Management? The record label?” As Hendrix asked this question, two sparkling waters with lime appeared in front of them.

Joss regarded the new beverage choice with a notable lack of enthusiasm.
