We drive to the bar in Arlo’s limo, picking Nikki up along the way. She arches a brow at me in a way that says, We will talk about this later.

Once inside, Arlo commandeers one of the VIP tables and sets himself up with a view of the whole room. He buys a few bottles. When the three of us have a drink, Nikki leans over and says, “What’s your deal, anyway?”

Arlo arches a brow. “My deal?”

“Why are you here?”

“I can’t come dance?”

Her gaze narrows. “Do you always come out to dance with your employees?”

He sips his drink, shrugging. “No.”

That’s it. That’s all he says. Nikki glares at me, then grabs my arm and drags me to the washroom. “What. Are. You. Doing.”

I reapply my lipstick and avoid her gaze. “So, um. He remembered me.”

“Don’t tell me you’re sleeping with your boss, Bonnie.”

“You go girl!” a drunk woman in one of the stalls calls out. “Is he hot?”

“Yes,” I answer. “Very.”

“It’s a bad idea.” Nikki shakes her head. “Come on, Bonnie. You know it is.”

“Killjoy,” the drunk woman grumbles.

“I know.” I finally look my friend in the eyes and put a hand on her forearm. “I hear you, Nikki. I’ll be careful.”

She doesn’t look convinced, but she lets out a sigh. “Let’s just dance, okay?”

We go back out and find a group of friends on the dance floor. Teddy is already dancing with a partner, but another friend, Mark, sweeps me into his arms with a roguish smile. “You look beautiful, Bonnie.”

I let the music infuse my movements and dance with Mark, spinning and swaying my hips over the dance floor. All the while, I feel Arlo’s gaze on me. At one point, I look over my dance partner’s shoulder and see him watching me, sipping his drink. The darkness in his eyes makes heat tighten low in my stomach, a promise of what’s to come.

Another man I don’t know cuts in, and I laugh as he twirls me. The music pulses around us as the club fills up, and I let the beat take me away.

This is how I used to feel when I ran track. It was almost like an out-of-body experience. It was something I was truly good at—good enough to get a full-ride scholarship to college. I mostly ran mid- and long-distances, when my body would take over and my mind would go quiet.

My ankle injury ended all that.

Tonight, I don’t feel the throb in the joint as I dance. And whenever I feel Arlo’s eyes on me, I might put an extra sway in my hips. I can’t help it. He makes my blood heat with nothing but a look. It’s always been that way between us.

A part of me feels vindicated, like the last three years weren’t a lie. I pined over him, dreamed about him. I had half-convinced myself that I was making it up, that there was no way our connection was as electric as it was.

But I’m across a crowded club from him.
