"Are you suggesting," I asked, "that participation in sports is freeing women from those images?"

"You better believe it," Angi said.

"I do, I do," I said. "I wouldn't be coaching if I didn't believe in the educational, social, psychological, and confidence-building values of sports for women and men."

''That's good to hear,'' Angi said, "and I know you believe that, Coach." Then she picked up her stride in assessing the Oberlin squad: "Those players out there this afternoon were anything but frail and passive ladies; they were strong, vigorous, muscular, fast, and some played with reckless abandon. Some had hair on their legs and they peppered their language with 'shits' and 'damns' and no telling what else." Sam stopped eating for a second, looked up at Angi, then reached for a french fry. Angi glanced at him, then looked at me and added, "Our Jill really excels in heading the ball; the rest of us work at it. Oberlin has a dozen or so players who could head the ball with courage and do a heck of a lot more. And that one center forward, the one their fans kept cheering for, was scrappy and strong. Boy, was she quick."
