“And they’re sure that Sean is the head witch of that coven?” Hugh asks as they wait for the person that Nick said could provide proof that Sean is a witch.
Hugh had almost started to believe that maybe he had finally lost it and had went totally insane. For years, Hugh had wondered, how could it be that DeMatteo couldn’t recognize that he was his true mate? He was completely isolated from most other members in the pride, but he often heard them speak of his obsession with the Alpha.
He had all but given up on making any connections until Nick had joined the pride. Being human he was able to resist the influence of the Alpha siblings that had systematically poisoned the others against him. They had soon became friends after finding shared interest in movies and other pop culture.
At first Hugh had been hesitant of befriending a human, but as DeMatteo started to pull away Nick had been his constant companion. Nick’s presence lessened Hugh’s pain at his mate’s ambivalence towards their bond. Once DeMatteo had brought that human home Hugh had confided in Nick that he believed DeMatteo was his mate and this imposter was trying to steal him.
Nick had promised to check the human out with some of his other human contacts, ones that had no association with the pride, and within a few days Nick had come back with the answers.
“I told you Hugh, this person has had contact with Sean before. This is not the first time this coven has stolen a mate and killed them. They are nuts, they believe in some crazy prophecy that speaks of a human mated with a shifter. If you changed your mind, now is the time to say it because they just pulled in.” Nick stresses as they watch a tan SUV pull into the parking lot.
“No, I’m sure. I’m just worried about going against such a powerful witch.”
“Well that depends on how serious you are about saving your mate.” Nick offers as he steps out of the vehicle to greet their guest.
Hugh and his lion bristle at the challenge. Getting out of the car to stand beside Nick Hugh nearly growls out. “Oh, I’m deadly serious.”
“Well that’s good to hear since you will be the one to help me kill the witch.” Their guest quips as they shake hands.
Nick smiles as Hugh sits down with the other hunter, it was almost too easy. When he first infiltrated the pack he thought that it would be difficult to get to the Alpha. He was constantly surrounded by the rest of his filthy pride, making a move would be a death sentence.
But then he met Hugh, it was clear from the beginning that this one was mentally unstable, so his family decided to bide their time. The opportunity presented itself when DeMatteo got more active in searching for his mate. Hugh became more and more unstable as the other man pulled back. Making it easier to get closer to the weak link and give him gentle nudges.
