Chapter Eleven
Gavin put the truck in park and tried to hold on to his nerves. He was torn between excitement and dread. After their earlier argument, when he had come down to find Hunt just walking back into the house, he’d been so afraid that Hunt would send him away that he’d geared himself up for the moment. When it hadn’t come, his relief had been so profound that it had made him stumble into Hunt’s body, forcing him to touch Gavin. Even now, as he got out of the truck, he still felt the tingles left over from the jolt to his system that was Hunt’s hands on his arms.
“Where’s a good spot?” he asked, walking round to where Hunt stood looking over the area.
“I think that spot over there, closest to the lake, will do.”
Hunt was avoiding looking at him, but Gavin could work with that. He was determined to have some answers before they had to go back to civilization. And if things still didn’t make sense after, then he’d call his therapist and schedule a session. But he needed to know if the feelings he’d been fighting the past few weeks were a result of his being lonely or of his discovering that he had feelings for his best friend. Maybe he’d still need to see her, because damned if he knew what he’d do if he found out he was falling for Hunt.
“Looks good. Let’s get set up.”
They took the two-person tent and poles out and chose the best spot near the shore to set it up. They cleared the spot of debris, and once the poles were secure and the tent stretched over them, they set the guy lines and then went back to get the rest of the things they had brought with them.
“I’ll go gather some firewood,” Hunt said, walking away before Gavin could reply.
Gavin smiled, knowing Hunt would continue to avoid him until he couldn’t any longer. He could understand that. He was scared, too, though he knew he had to hide it from Hunt. And he understood why Hunt would try to escape. His heart had been broken once before and he would do everything in his power to save himself from even more pain. Gavin would do his best not to hurt him again, but he wasn’t going to let him run away this time. Now that he knew, he felt he had a responsibility to Hunt to figure things out.
Eventually, the tent was set up and Gavin was hot enough to fancy a swim. He had come to this campground before, and the spot where they’d pitched their tent was far enough away that other campers who might show up wouldn’t see them right away, so they’d have a measure of privacy. It was also far enough away from the bathrooms to mean they wouldn’t need to see anyone until they went to use the facilities.
“I’m gonna take a swim,” he told Hunt. “Then we can figure out food.
