Wolves really did have big appetites — almost as big as bears. He was surprised, and wondered if she was half starved. He'd taken her for an average, not very well groomed girl of slender build. Now he wondered if she was half starved and didn't have the opportunity to keep cleaner.
She ate almost everything. Tomas, to his credit, was very kind to her, pushing things in her direction, distracting her with simple questions or observations when she got nervous and frightened. He was really good with her, and it shocked Dane, who'd only seen him being belligerent and untrusting. He'd practically walked out of Dane's life altogether over Marlow.
As he went to bring back some more honey buns, and then get the shop open, because it was almost time, the fox followed him. Tomas whispered, "I can't help it, okay? She's a shifter girl who needs help. I — I wish somebody had helped my mom, okay?"
He looked up at Dane defiantly, and ran fingers back through his hair. "She had me pretty young, and she was mostly on her own. My daddy got hit by a car when I was little."
Dane nodded and reached out to squeeze his shoulder gently. "How can we fix this, though?" He didn't want to invite the girl back to his place and make the whole apartment smell like wolves, sending Tomas skittishly further away from him. He looked at his mate helplessly.
Tomas's nostrils flared as he thought. "I . . . I don't know," he admitted. "But you can't leave her alone. She has to be safe."
He'd practically adopted her already, realized Dane, and he grinned, feeling good all over again at his mate's tender nature.
Tomas looked hopeless and helpless, discouraged by the mere thought of how to help, how to fix this. "I can't even take care of myself," he whispered, shoulders slumping, hands hanging uselessly at his side. "I . . . I mean, I live in an empty—" He stopped and looked up suddenly, raising his chin. "Never mind. I'm fine." His eyes glittered, daring Dane to call him on it. "Just . . . take care of her. Figure out some way of contacting her head alpha, maybe, and she'll be the responsibility of the wolves again."
He backed away, and slung his backpack a little higher.
"Are you going?" yelped Dane. "Don't leave me!"
"I'll see you soon. I'm sorry," said Tomas and moved back to the table, grabbing one more piece of toast, and taking it with him.
He was gone in a flash, slipping past Caitlyn as she came in the back, the first employee to show up.
"What's up, boss?" she asked, looking up at him wide-eyed. "It's super early to have people here."
"Just . . . uh . . . some friends." He looked at Beth, who had frozen at the little table, her cheeks bulging. "She's my cousin," he managed at last, unconvincingly. "Visiting."
The wolf shifter nodded quickly, her eyes huge and scared. "Uh . . . Beth .
