Care of the flute
Baroque woodwind instruments need to be oiled to protect the wood from the ravages of heat and moisture. It is a good idea to ascertain from the maker which particular sort of oil they recommend for the oiling of the instruments that they make; usually this will be almond or linseed oil. The first thing to do is to disassemble the instrument. In the case of a Hotteterre-type flute, remove the head finial by carefully twisting it off. Before removing the cork from the head joint determine its position using the following method. Assuming that the maker has put the cork in the right place, carefully put a length of dowel into the bore so that it touches the cork without moving it and then, using a pencil, carefully mark the centre of the embouchure hole on the dowel. This will then act as a reference point when replacing the cork. Now very carefully push the cork out with a short length of dowelling which is almost as wide as the cork to ensure that the dowel does not pierce or dent the cork. For a standard four-piece baroque flute the cork may well be attached to an end screw which fits into an end cap. This too can be eased out carefully and placed to one side. The next thing to do is to remove the key from the foot joint. This is achieved by carefully poking the retaining pin out of its seat with a suitable point, such as a jewellerâs screwdriver which is slightly smaller in diameter than the pin; again, exercise care. The key will spring clear of the joint so take care not to carry out this action where the key is likely to be lost, for example over grates in churches. Never attempt to remove the pin with a pair of pliers. Next, using a suitable piece of rag attached to the end of a piece of dowelling, oil the inside of the bore taking care not to get oil on the tenons, joints, or the area where the key pad comes into contact with the foot joint. If oil is placed on the tenons or joints carefully remove it with a piece of clean rag to ensure proper fitting of the joints. Likewise remove any oil from the key pad.
