If you are designing from a photograph that you’d rather not draw on, try using a piece of string. Use that string to measure one part of the photo, like a leg, and then use that as your constant. How many leg lengths is the body? The head? Remember that you don’t have to measure everything, just those shapes you’ve decided to use in your design.

What if the object isn’t a picture? Perhaps you are looking out the window at a strange man crouching on the street. You might not want to go right up to him with a piece of string, but from a safe distance (you can be the judge of that), you still might be able to learn a few things. Close one eye. Then try extending your arm so that there is no bend in the elbow. With your fist pointing at the subject, give him a thumbs up. Always keep the elbow strait but feel free to move the thumb sideways or whichever way you need to measure the shapes in relation to it. A leg may be a thumb length while the head is a quarter thumb length. If at any time the strange man notices you and starts coming your way, I would stop. It may look like you are pointing at him or winking at him, and it is never a good idea to be rude to a strange man, especially one with a curly mustache.
