“I SHOULD GO,” Pat said. To Lee’s ears, he sounded reluctant.
They’d dressed in boxers and moved to Lee’s couch after their backs had started to hurt from lying on the floor for so long. Lee was propped in the corner, legs held up by an ottoman, and Pat was stretched across the couch with his head in Lee’s lap.
Lee ran his fingers through Pat’s hair. “You don’t want to stay the night?” He wanted to wake up with Pat in his arms in the morning, make breakfast together, and spend the day lazing around.
“I do.” Pat raised an arm and traced Lee’s lips with a finger. “I really, really do. But I have morning skate at seven.”
It was two in the morning according to Lee’s watch. They’d spent all night cuddling, talking, and finishing off the last of the chocolate chip cookies.
“On a Sunday? Sunday’s the day of rest.”
Pat snorted. “Tell that to the hockey gods. Every tenth game we have compulsory morning skate on game day. Tomorrow’s that game day.”
Lee sighed deeply. So much for waking up together. Seventeen years he’d waited; was one morning too much to ask?
Granted they’d have other mornings, but still. He wanted this one. He realized his thoughts bordered on sullen teen but couldn’t bring himself to care.
Pat shifted and the blanket over him slid down, exposing Pat’s massive shoulders and muscular chest. The tree lights dotted his bare skin, making it gleam like jewels in sunshine.
Pat sat up and kissed Lee’s nose. “Come home with me?”
“When?”
“Now.”
Maybe Lee was too tired because he definitely didn’t understand the question.
“Come home with me now and we’ll sleep. Well, you’ll sleep. I’ll have what amounts to a nap. You can sleep in. I’ll be back about nine thirty or so, and we can hang out until I have to leave for the rink at four thirty.”
“Where’s Jordan?” Lee thought to ask.
“I asked my parents to take her tonight and tomorrow so I could spend time with you.” Pat’s smile was winsome, and he kissed Lee’s nose again.
Looked like Lee would get the morning he wanted after all. If a small part of him felt guilty that Pat was missing time with his daughter, well, if Pat wasn’t going to feel bad about it then neither was he.
“We should take separate cars so I can get home later,” Lee said.
“I’ll drive you back after the game.”
“Won’t you be tired?”
“No, I’m always wired after a game. Come with me,” Pat whined, peppering tiny kisses all over Lee’s face.
“Okay, okay.” Lee laughed and pulled away. “Let me get dressed and grab my toothbrush and an extra T-shirt.”
They were in Pat’s SUV twenty minutes later, flying along the highway toward Pat’s condo in Toronto. There were more cars than Lee’d expected for the middle of the night, but it was Toronto, where nothing ever really slowed down.
Lee reached into the backseat and grabbed the blanket they’d spent all night lying on or under, spreading it over his thighs.
“Are you cold?” Pat turned the heat up.
