Chapter Nine

Lily popped two more ibuprofen before leaving her classroom because her hair still hurt. She was toasted, roasted, and fried, with no viable plan to avoid deportation to Safe According to Chase Nowhereville. Raphael Tessier’s demands haunted her. Jason needed her. She was falling in love with her costar from their little drama of horrors, and he wasn’t falling in love back.

Again.

Was there a pill for that?

After classes were through for the day, she’d met with a couple of teachers to collaborate on a joint project. Meeting over, they all made their way to their cars together. In light of the attacks on Jason, there was now supervision of the grounds by the staff until all students were off the property. Jason’s aunt had agreed to take him to school and pick him up afterward until the danger had passed. The teachers had agreed to leave in pairs.

The reassuring click of her car lock echoed, and she laughed at her co-worker’s lame joke as he paused by her car. She opened her car door. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of a white piece of folded paper laying on the driver’s seat. An ordinary white sheet of paper, but nothing she had left there earlier in the day. A dull buzz filled her head as she finished with her goodbyes. In a daze, she watched the other teacher approach his truck before scanning the lot. She squinted at hedges rimming the property before canvassing the almost empty lot. Nothing.

Using the edges of her fingernails, she lifted the note as she slid into the driver’s seat. She shut and locked the doors, then careful to touch only the barest edge, unfolded the note.

A small thump on her car door window upped the terror ante. The note slipped from her fingers and dropped to the floor as her heart sky-dived into action. Her eyes slid left, expecting to see a tattooed face. Instead, she spied her co-worker getting ready to tap on the window again. She closed her eyes as her shoulders slumped, and her brain plotted a course back from scared sick. One hand went to her heart, the other went to the window button.

“Sorry didn’t mean to startle you. Forgot to give you this on the way out. Thought you might want it.” A file appeared in the open window as he frowned. “Sorry again. Sure you’re okay?”

She nodded. “Yeah, I’m fine. A little jumpy, you know? See you tomorrow.” She smiled and set the file on the passenger seat. “Thanks.”

She tracked his progress to his truck in her rearview window before bending down to retrieve the piece of paper from under her shoe. Her uneasy fingers unfolded the edges. She swallowed as the large black, sloppy message became visible.

Bitch. I can get to you any time. Anywhere. You have 24 hours.

Her fingers managed a methodical refolding before the shudders overtook her. Her hand convulsed around the edges of the paper until it collapsed and disappeared inside her fist.
