“It’s so beautiful.” Khale looked out in awe at Mirror Pond. He’d heard of this place many times, and had always wanted to see it. And when Ballen had been listing off patrols for that night, Khale had volunteered to go with the vampire to patrol the area around Mirror Pond.
Ballen tossed a rock into the water, disturbing its perfect mirror image of the sky above. “This used to be a beautiful place to visit. Now I don’t really see it like that anymore,” he said dismally.
“May I ask why?”
Dropping the rest of the rocks he held, Ballen turned toward him. “This was where Eveen and Wesley were kidnapped by Gravaick and his men.”
Khale had heard of this. Had been told of what had happened to the human and poor vampire. It had pained him to learn of their suffering.
His eyes filling with sorrow, Ballen looked out over the water. “I feel terrible for Aliam. Eveen was not only his mate—she was his everything. I’d always thought that if or when I find my mate, I hoped that I could share the same love those two had. Their bonding was inspirational to the heart. I knew Aliam before he met Eveen, and I could see the better man she made him when they got together.” Bowing his head, he nudged the dirt with the tip of his boot. “When Eveen was murdered, I think the whole coven mourned more greatly than ever before. She was not only an amazing mate to Aliam, but an amazing person all around. Everyone loved her. And now she’s gone.”
“Is that why Aliam left?”
Ballen’s brow furrowed a little as he said, “Remus never said what the reason for his leaving was, but the others and I are pretty sure that’s why. Aliam had taken her death and held it too close to his heart. We could all see it, see how it was eating away at him. In the end, I think he finally realized that his reactions to her death were hurtling him toward the edge. It was consuming him in the worst way.”
Khale felt a stab of sadness for the man. “I can only imagine how hard it was for him.”
“Yeah. And it must have been hard leaving the coven, but I understand why he did it. Remus said something about him going to live with Eveen’s family. I hope he finds peace there.”
“Have you found peace with it?” Khale was a little nervous to ask, but he could tell Eveen’s death was hard on him as well.
Ballen shook his head. “No, and I don’t imagine I will until Gravaick’s head is on a spike. That man has created havoc for everyone, and if there is any reason above the others to find him, it’s so I can avenge Eveen’s death…for Aliam.”
Khale had to wonder how strong the couple’s love had been for it to affect so many people. He had never found love, and he had to wonder if he would ever find a love that strong.
