Conclusion
Barring error, between the late 1600s and the mid-nineteenth century artisan guilds became more formal, organized and perhaps rigid. Market contraction pushed artisans in this direction: as they sought to defend themselves against competitors, they promoted the gedik, which had not been unknown in earlier periods but only became widespread during the economic stringency of the later 1700s. Apart from limiting competition between masters themselves, the gedik had the advantage of giving their sons a head start. For journeymen without any claim to such an inheritance, there remained only the rather forlorn hope that the masters’ sons might become soldiers, members of a dignitary’s household or medrese students. We do not know much about the lives and thoughts of such journeymen, stuck in a subordinate position and unlikely to ever acquire a mastership.
