Chapter Thirteen

Tanner waited for Kay to show up all morning, but she never did. So he toyed with the phone and found an SD card. Kyle wasn’t the type of guy to carry one, he thought frowning. Tanner removed it and made a copy and then replaced in the phone. He took the phone back to his car assuming she wouldn’t show and went back inside to call her.

He called her house and got no answer and a bad feeling nibbled at him. What if something was wrong? He set the phone on his desk and got to his feet and headed out of his office with every intention of going over to her home to check on her. In his rush, he almost ran into Avery.

“What’s up?” Tanner asked distracted.

“Cops are here to see you.”

Tanner frowned. Kay must have gone to them and told them he might know something. He’d be glad to give them Kyle’s phone, but there had been no reason for her to send the police for it. “Okay, send them back.” He stepped back into his office and went to sit behind his desk. “Come in.” His office door opened, and Tanner forced himself to relax.

The two policemen stepped into his office and Tanner eyed them curiously.

“Mr. Clemens,” the barely taller one said coolly. “I’m Detective Barron, my partner Detective Rush.”

He gave them a nod. “How can I help you?” he asked.

“You have a nice store,” Rush said. “Did Kyle Turner ever come here?”

“He was only here a handful of times maybe,” he replied with a confused frown. “Why? What is this about?”

“We’re investigating Turner’s death,” Barron told him.

He nodded. “I see.”

“How long had you and two known each other?” Rush asked.

“Since junior high,” Tanner answered.

“Were you still friends?” Barron queried as Rush began looking around the office.

Tanner shrugged. “I guess. We weren’t close anymore.”

Barron took a seat in one of the chairs in front of Tanner’s desk. “What about Kay, his wife? Are you friends with her?”

“I didn’t know her that well, but I liked her. Her cousin is engaged to my brother,” he replied icily.

“Is your brother gay?” Barron asked.

“No.” Tanner frowned. “What are you—don’t touch that,” he cried when Rush bent to lift the lid on the box Sinclair had brought with him yesterday. He’d intended to put the goodies away for next time.

“Why not?” Rush asked curiously.

“It’s private!” He got to his feet and rounded his desk to pick up the box.

“I can get a warrant,” Rush said and shrugged carelessly.

Tanner glared at him. “Get one then,” he snapped.

“Where were you yesterday afternoon?” Barron demanded.

“Here, ask my manager and the associate,” he muttered. “My boyfriend came by and brought me lunch.”

“Was your boyfriend with you a few nights ago, too?” Rush asked his gaze going to the box.

“We were at his place,” he said. “We sort of live together.”

“Sort of?” Barron asked studying him.

He sighed. “What is this about?”

“Three men who knew Kyle were killed in the last few days,” Rush told him evenly.
