7.0 Conclusion

Although the initially obvious and commonly assumed interpretation of the text is that within the canon of the poem, the character LORD represents the actual Judeo-Christian god, God, who visits upon the human Dreamer, within the dream, which occurs in normal, healthy, REM-phase of sleep, and which it is assumed that the Dreamer later awoke from in order to recount the event in past-tense, precipitating the text itself, it has been shown within this analysis that many elements of this assumption can be substituted for less obvious alternatives, and which drastically alter the importance, and implications, of the text. While countless Christian individuals hold this poem in high regard, it is my belief that they do so with undeserved esteem for the text. As a fictional narrative, the story is fraught with plot holes. From an author-centric point of view, the text disregards many implications which become clear upon cursory analysis. As a tool to assist individuals struggling with grief or difficult periods of life, the poem implies a shifting of responsibility away from the individual, and towards LORD. This may assist in accepting and consolidating guilt [75], or providing some hope that future hardships will be merely temporary, but also can be liable to foster a negative attitude regarding personal responsibility, resulting in a resistance to self-improvement, which may be necessary for positive development required to avoid those very future hardships. In terms of politics, this is a decidedly conservative view reminiscent of hardline capitalism and which, ironically, when observed in individuals within the Western hemisphere usually coincides with a strong Christian faith, and probably a face-value agreement with and appreciation for the text.
