Chapter Five
The next morning, after they’d all eaten breakfast, Nathan and Lee were in the kitchen making a shopping list. “Right,” Nathan said, tucking the pen behind his ear, “I’m going to go and see if there’s anything else Jonny wants. Back in a mo.”
He headed for the spare bedroom, notepad in hand, feeling much happier than he had yesterday. Sure, the situation was still pretty bonkers, but the three of them had had a really long, thorough talk and gone over every what-if they could think of, and come up with an answer. Then, in a stroke of genius, Jonny had even said that, once he’d made his decision, he’d just walk to the farm himself and make the phone call. Nobody else would even need to know that Nathan and Lee had helped him.
After knocking on the door, Nathan retrieved the pen from behind his ear, ready for any requests Jonny might have. There was no answer. He waited for a few moments then knocked again. He might be asleep, or in the en suite bathroom. If it was the former, he’d feel bad for waking him, though he was sure Jonny wouldn’t mind, given this was his only opportunity to speak up if there was anything particular he wanted from the supermarket.
Nothing. Nathan shifted from foot to foot, his heart rate picking up. What if he wasn’t asleep or in the bathroom? What if he’d had a relapse? Passed out? Died?
Louder this time, he rapped on the door. “Jonny? Are you in there? Are you all right?” Knocked again. “Jonny!”
His panic and wild imagination unwilling to let him wait any longer, he flung open the door and stepped into the room. He felt a slight sense of relief when Jonny wasn’t in the bed—not relapsed then—then realized he could have passed out in the bathroom, banged his head on the sink…
He’d taken a single step toward the en suite when he heard a noise—or rather the ceasing of a noise he hadn’t noticed before—then the rattle of the door handle. He stood, frozen, as a totally naked Jonny stepped out of the en suite, rubbing a towel over his dripping hair.
Opening his mouth to stutter an apology, he got interrupted when Lee barreled into the room behind him, almost crashing into his back. “Hey, I heard banging. Is everything all— Oh!”
Jonny glanced at them, seemingly untroubled by the fact that he was standing there, completely starkers, and two blokes had just burst into the room, and were now gawping at him. A slow, wide smile crept over his face. “All right, lads?”
His face so hot he worried the skin would melt right off, Nathan weakly wafted his notebook in the air. “I’m s-sorry, I just c-came to see if you needed anything…from the supermarket. I knocked on the d-door and you didn’t reply. I kept knocking, then panicked because I thought you’d got ill again, or passed out and banged your head, or—”
“Hey.” Jonny put his hands on his hips, then spoke, his tone gentle, “It’s all right, honestly.
