Chapter Four

“Didn’t I tell you, boy? That you’d regret crossing me,” Lindsay hissed.

Strapped and tied down to a chair, Remy could do nothing but wince as she raked her claws down the side of his cheek. Pain flared at the torn skin, but he refused to give her any satisfaction.

A damnably hard thing to do, given Remy almost hyperventilated when he caught sight of the room Lindsay prepared for him.

Again, Remy had no clue where Raker had taken him. Raker had blindfolded him all the way. The next time Raker took off the blindfold, Remy found himself in another windowless dark room. Probably somewhere underground again. This time, the room came equipped with hooks on the walls, an uncomfortable chair, and a freaky metal hospital tray lined with sharp tools.

“Ethan’s going to come and get me,” Remy repeated.

This time his voice sounded shaky, more uncertain, and Lindsay instantly picked up on it.

“I don’t you believe that anymore.” A smile curved on her blood red painted lips.

Lindsay flicked a strand of her perfect platinum blonde hair over her shoulder. Dressed from head to toe in designer labels, she certainly didn’t look like a psychopath. Then again, if the huge and hulking silent man dressed all in black beside her was any indication—Lindsay wasn’t interested in getting her hands dirty. Why would she, when she had others to do the dirty work for her?

God. Remy didn’t know how his sanity and stupid bravery would last.

“I do. Ethan says I’m his mate. He’ll come, no matter the cost.”

Lindsay’s face darkened, and Remy felt the painful slap a second later. Something he said had pissed her off. Was it the word ‘mate’? Ethan did say although Lindsay was Miriam’s mother, he never considered her his mate. Remy latched onto that little fact with some satisfaction, and decided to use it to his advantage.

“Shut the hell up,” she shrieked.

“Lindsay, calm down,” the torturer in black said, gripping her shoulder, but she pushed him away.

Remy could hear some commotion from upstairs. Men shouted, argued, their voices turning to growls.

“Check out what’s happening outside,” Lindsay told the torturer, voice uncontrolled.

The man hesitated a second, before heading back up. Maybe he remembered she was the boss, and paid his bills.

“You and Ethan had a child together. You were his wife, but you’ll never be his mate. That’s both sad and pathetic.”

Her nails lengthened, turning to sharp claws. Remy swallowed, realizing he might have pushed her too far. On the upside, if Lindsay lost her temper and killed him by accident, he wouldn’t need to die a slow and painful death by torture.

How crazy was that? A hysterical laugh slipped out of Remy before he could stop himself.

“Something funny?” Lindsay hissed.

Upstairs, the sounds grew louder, more violent. Guns went off, followed by screams. Remy’s heart leapt in his throat. Ethan?

“Die, human trash,” she hissed. Remy groaned when Lindsay took a fistful of his hair, and bared his neck. He struggled, and tried to fight against the restraints when he felt the sharp point of her claws against his neck.
