Chapter Seven

Leandro watched as Jose drank, remembering his first time he ’d tasted blood. All the fear, anxiety, and repulsion of feeding melted away with that first delicate sip as Emerico stood firmly by his side making sure that he had drained his first victim to the point of death instead of leaving a reluctant vampire mutant behind. All things changed at that one defining moment. The moment he truly became a vampire.

He knew he was being hard on Jose. But at least he subdued the woman, making his first feeding less gory and traumatic than his was. He had drained another mercenary who was hired by the Romani, a psychopath Frenchman that killed for the sheer pleasure of it, fooling him into thinking that Leandro was still on his side, but in fact wasn’t, killing and draining him when the Frenchman’s back was turned. After that first taste, all of Leandro’s guilt, the little he felt, dissipated. After all, if the Frenchman had a pair of fangs, he wouldn’t have thought twice about killing Leandro.

He was lucky to have had Emerico. Lucky that he had saved his life and lucky that he showed him how to kill like a vampire should. He was a patient and caring creature that forgave him his past sins, wiping the slate clean and bestowing him the gift of being reborn and a chance at a new life. A better and honest life.

When he gazed into Jose ’s eyes, black as the darkest night, he was confident that Jose’s transition was complete. His newfound powers would kick in, and it was up to Leandro to be his mentor, as Emerico had been his so long ago. He owed it to Emerico, to the Fraternidad, and most of all, to Jose, a good and gentle young man who deserved to learn from the best. Him.

* * * * “ It’s time to go,” Leandro urged from the open balcony doors as Jose took his last transforming drinks of blood. “Is she dead?”

Jose wiped at his mouth with the back of his hand, smearing blood across his lips and cheek. He nodded.

“Positive?”

“Her heart has stopped and”—Jose ran a quick glance over the woman’s face—“she looks…ashen.”

“Good indicators that she’s dead. Now let’s go.”

“We can’t just leave her here…like this.”

“What do you suggest we do with her? Drag her out from a second-story balcony on our backs and find the nearest cemetery and give her a proper burial? Or maybe we should scale the rooftops and throw her in the river? I’m sure we will go unnoticed,” he added sarcastically.

“No. No, we can’t do that,” Jose responded, his voice a whisper.

“I understand your need to make it right in some way, but you have. Jose, she was dead long before we got here. We just gave her what she couldn’t give herself. Peace.”

“You know that for sure?”

“Yes. I would never feed on someone that didn’t already want to die. It’s not the Fraternidad’s way. You must always remember that.
