ALTERNATIVES AND IMPROVISATIONS

We use far more water, soap, and other personal cleaning supplies than are necessary. The market sells us on using all sorts of soaps, shampoos, conditioners, deodorants, moisturizers, creams, and bath aids that waste our money, pollute our water, and often do more harm than good to us. A practical return to more conservative methods can save money and may be necessary in the future. There were periods in my life where abundant hot water was not available. The house was cold in winter for lack of fuel, and a fast “sponge bath” was the best one could do. A thorough sponge bath taken with a warm, soapy sponge or washcloth and then a rinsing wet towel can be as effective as a fast shower. Be sure to cover the floor with towels to avoid slipping. Soapy towels and washcloths can become breeding grounds for mildew and mold; they must be rinsed and dried effectively before reuse.

Assuming that the bathtub’s drain still works, there are several ways to improvise showers. Sun Showers and other hanging-bag-type shower devices designed for camping can be used indoors if necessary. Keep in mind that these are pretty heavy when filled with water and you may need to establish a strong anchor point on the ceiling above your tub from which to hang them. Of course, in warm weather they can be used outdoors in an enclosed stall or while you are wearing a bathing suit. Another alternative is to use a garden sprayer tank. Pumped up with pressure, one of these can provide a good shower with a small volume of water. With a little work, it can be modified to self-administer the shower, or you can have a family member do it. These are the same devices commonly used for chemical and biological decontamination.

In between sponge baths and improvised showers, you must wash your face, feet, underarms, and genital area at least daily. Daily toothbrushing and flossing are also essential. Dental problems when there is no dentist available can be a serious survival issue, and bad teeth often lead to other ailments.

You may notice that there were a lot more beards in the “old days.” That’s because it was easier to trim a beard with a knife or scissors than shave daily in the backwoods. That may return, but most men will prefer daily shaving. Any bar soap remnants can be placed in a mug and brushed into a lather with a shaving brush. Currently available disposable razors can be stretched to last for up to a month; but when the supply runs out, you will need to have a straight-razor that can be sharpened indefinitely. Shaving with one of these takes more care and, yes, you will get cut a few times until you get the hang of it. Ouch!

Badger fur shaving brushes can still be purchased for $20 to $50, but a good one can last a lifetime. Straight razors are still available but expensive at $75 to $120.
