Both a Little Scared,

the Gleam in Your Eyes Is So Familiar

I’M NOT sure when I passed out, but I woke up around one in the morning practically falling out of my bed because I’d forgotten I was in the middle of an adult sleepover and there was a naked man snoring quietly next to me.

“What did I do?” and “Who the fuck cares?” ping-ponged back and forth in my brain for a minute or two as I shivered from not having any pants on. My T-shirt, which I hadn’t taken off apparently, was giving me armpit wedgies. I pulled the fabric out from under my arms and grabbed a pair of shorts from my nightstand drawer. I looked back and watched Sebastian sleeping, and a whole slew of wicked thoughts went racing through my mind and then went racing through my….

You know what? I am not going to go into detail since I don’t fuck and tell, but I will let you know that all those built-up hormones exploded everywhere a couple of hours ago.

No, that wasn’t a euphemism, you dirty tramp.

Okay, maybe it was a little bit. Shut up.

Anycrap, I looked at the time again and subtracted three hours. I don’t know why I thought of it just then, but I remembered texting Kyle that I was going to call him back. It was only ten something where he was, and those kids were probably up doing some gymnastic routine of their own for all I knew.

I took a chance regardless and tapped Kyle’s name on my phone as I made my way outside to not wake Sebastian up.

Also, I reeeeally needed a cigarette.

The phone rang three times before Kyle answered with a melancholic “Hey.”

“What’s wrong?” I said, knowing the kid too well.

“Why does something have to be wrong?” he whined as I lit up.

“You want to go three rounds about why I am asking what’s wrong or d’you want to just come out and tell me?”

Kyle exhaled his patented long-suffering sigh and told me the story about Brad getting a job at the local gay gym—of course he did—and magically moving up the corporate ladder in a matter of hours. From what I heard, Kyle threw a hissy fit, and Brad walked out of their apartment.

“Oh,” I said when he got to the end.

“Oh?” he asked. “Just oh?”

“Well, I don’t know if you’re in a place to hear what comes after the ‘oh.’”

“How am I wrong?” he asked, anger creeping into his voice. “You know the guy who owns the gym is just cruising him.”

“Yeah, but that’s not what you’re upset about,” I countered.

“Yes, I am.”

“No, it’s not.”

“Well, then, oh wise one, tell me why I’m actually upset.”

“Okay, oh whining brat of little patience,” I replied. “You are upset because you’re threatened by the fact other people find your boy attractive. You imagine him at a gym with strangers hitting on him and you can’t do a thing about it.” I said all this completely trying to ignore that fact I’d gone through the exact same thing with Riley.
