FRIDAY was a madhouse. Something had clicked both with him and with the town. It seemed that the word had truly gotten around, because the store was busy all day. Angie had agreed to stay the entire day, so Marcus spent the morning trying to keep up with the sales and helping in the store. The past few weeks had seen a sea change for him in so many ways. He definitely needed more store help and bakery help. Thank goodness he’d spoken with Maureen early yesterday afternoon, and she seemed as excited to be working for him as Marcus was excited to have her. She was willing to work while her children were in school, so that worked out very well. He and Angie had reviewed the state of the business, and she’d agreed that they needed to hire additional help.

“I’ll be willing to put additional money into the business and work additional hours to see you succeed,” Angie had said before hugging him tight. “Your mother would be so proud of you, and I think that your father will be as well once the old goat realizes the magnitude of what you’re doing.” Angie had squeezed him hard, and for a few seconds, he almost thought it was his mother holding him. Angie had even been able to recommend some people she thought might work out as employees in the store so Becky could eventually move to the kitchen full time. Everything was working out.

Marcus looked up as Gregory walked through the kitchen to put his things by the desk, then hurried back toward the store, but not before coming over for a quick kiss and a smile. “Was work okay?” Marcus asked.

“Yes, and Susan is out front getting something to eat before she has to go home for a dinner of nuts and twigs. She says her house is like living with the female version of Euell Gibbons right now and she needs some real food.” Gregory walked away and then hurried back. “Some of her friends are having a commitment ceremony, and Susan convinced them to order their cake from us—when Kate was out of the room, that is.” Gregory grinned wickedly and then hurried toward the storefront. Marcus watched him, smiling when he realized Gregory had said cake from “us.” He liked the thought that Gregory felt included here.

A few minutes later, Marcus heard Gregory call him, and, looking up, he saw Katherine walking toward him. She was smiling, and he set down his pastry bag. “I know your father usually calls you, but I wanted to invite you and Gregory to dinner on Sunday. Joanna and Reggie will be there as well.”

“I’ll ask Gregory,” Marcus answered before realizing that Katherine had probably already spoken to him.

“I know you and your dad don’t get along, and I think that’s a shame. Your father can be a very loving man beneath his sometimes… gruff… exterior.”

“Is that your way of saying he can be a real asshole?” Marcus asked, and he saw her smile.
