Eva was still cursing Vidal that evening, while she waited for him in the lounge area. All afternoon she’d been tortured with a slew of X-rated images of him kissing various parts of her body.

When the stylist had taken her to a lingerie boutique it had got even worse. The stylist had ignored her protestations that she didn’t need sexy underwear, and as she couldn’t reveal why, she’d had to give in and let her do her thing.

Eva had found herself sighing over the wispiest bits of lace with ribbon ties, and bras that looked like works of art more than a device to support body parts. She’d never seen anything so decadent and beautiful.

Feeling guilty, because she’d known it would never be seen by anyone other than her, she’d allowed the stylist to box it all up and add it to the growing collection of boxes and bags.

She knew she was focusing on her irritation with Vidal to try and disguise her extreme anxiety at the thought of appearing in public with him at an event tonight. A charity ball, apparently, and one of San Francisco’s glitziest annual social fixtures. And she was also trying to hide the lingering hurt of his opinion of her. But in a way she realised that she could use it to her advantage—as a buffer to keep him from getting any closer.

She heard a sound and turned around, and every rational thought in her head disappeared. Vidal was standing a few feet away in a classic black tuxedo. His full metamorphosis from the son of a humble grounds manager to a titan of industry was complete.

His suit had to be bespoke, because there was no point where the material didn’t mould lovingly to his body and his muscles. He was...magnificent. Breathtaking.

His gaze was raking her up and down. Immediately Eva felt conscious, even though the stylist had come back with a hair and make-up team to help her get ready for this evening.

His eyes met hers. They stood out even more against the backdrop of black and white. He said, ‘You look stunning, Eva. Truly.’

‘I... Thank you.’

She’d been afraid the dress was too dramatic. Red and strapless, with a tight bodice, falling to the floor in a swathe of tulle over silk.

Eva had said to the stylist, ‘I’d like to stay under the radar if I can.’

The woman had laughed, ‘Standing beside Vidal Suarez? You haven’t a hope. Not many could pull this dress off, but with your colouring it’ll look spectacular.’

They’d left her hair down, artfully tousled. Thankfully, there was a minimum of make-up.

Vidal said, ‘We should go—my driver is waiting.’

Emotion was rising in Eva’s chest before she could stop it, and she realised it was a feeling of pride in Vidal that he would not thank her for.

Controlling her emotions had become much harder since her mother had died. It was as if suddenly Eva didn’t have to hold on so tightly. As if a too-tight button had finally been released.
