CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

By the time Monique reached her father’s house she was livid.

“How dare he try to tell me how to run my life? It is my freakin’ life,” she fussed as she walked in the door. “He has known me all of what…twenty-four hours and he thinks he can read me? Who in the hell does he think he is?”

Sasha came out of the door of the guest room and stood in the hallway looking up towards the kitchen. Al and Ryan stepped into the hallway with Lena and John behind them. They looked towards the kitchen as the refrigerator door slammed. They all glanced down the hallway at Sasha and shrugged. All of them made their way into the kitchen to watch Monique throw one item after another on the counter.

The turkey that was left from Christmas dinner, a loaf of bread, lettuce, and tomatoes were all on the island. A bag of chips landed just as they all took a seat watching. Al stood behind Ryan then leaned on the back of her stool.

“Like he has any idea what my life is all about. He dared to judge me. He don’t know me like that.” She looked at them. “Nobody gets to tell me how I should live my life. I have balance. I work and…and…I spend time with y’all. I don’t neglect my family…do I?”

“No,” Ryan said.

“No,” John said.

“Yes,” Lena said

“Yes,” Sasha said.

Al and Ryan turned to Sasha attempting to warn her with their look. Monique glared at her with the look of death.

“What in the hell do you mean, yes?”

“Well, Monique, you picked me up, told me you were my sister then dropped me off two days ago with people I don’t know and then disappeared. My mother has done stuff like that all my life so I’m used to it. Look, I understand you needing time to adjust to me being a part of your life, but ignoring me or hiding out is only avoiding the inevitable. We are going to need to spend time together to get past the awkwardness of being sisters.”

Monique slammed the soda on the countertop. “You think this is about you?”

Sasha looked around and shrugged. “Well, isn’t it? I mean it’s Christmas and the family has all been together either here or at Aunt Tracy’s and you’ve been missing in action. I’m sure if I wasn’t here you would be with your family during this time. I know I would if I had a family like this. To be honest I felt a little guilty running you away and punishing the rest of the family because of me.”

“Don’t fool yourself into thinking you have any impact on my life. I don’t run from anything. And I’m not punishing my family. I spend time with them…right?” Monique proclaimed as she looked around at them.

“No, you really don’t,” Ryan stated. “This is the most I’ve seen you since I moved into this house.”

Monique frowned at her then glared at her father who stood there all calm.
