Riley was itching for his notebook. He started writing notes about what Jason was saying in long, curving loops over Jason’s skin, thinking that way he could commit it to memory better. Or if he couldn’t, at least it would give him something to trace with his tongue later.

“Do you all work for Matt, then?” he asked.

Jason wriggled slightly, Riley’s fingers evidently tickling. “Well, Bryce is a deputy in town,” he said. “Tristan’s at college, so no, not those two. I don’t know what his arrangement is with Karl.”

“And the rest?”

Jason raised his head and looked at Riley, puzzled. “That’s it,” he said. “That’s the pack.”

Riley stared at him. “Eight shifters is a pack?” he asked. Jason’s expression made him realize how rude he’d been. “Sorry,” he said swiftly. “It’s just I’ve never heard of one that small. And all guys, too.”

“Yeah, well, that’s us,” Jason said, but he didn’t sound like he was making excuses. He sounded proud to be different. “I guess Matt never meant to form one,” he explained, running his fingers along the fine blond hairs on Riley’s forearm, making Riley shiver. “He just took each of us in when we needed somewhere, no questions asked.”

Sudden, blinding jealousy surged in Riley. God, what he would give for there to be a non-shifter version of Matt Urban out there somewhere, someone who would welcome people who needed to lose their past and find a new beginning.

He concentrated on the path his fingers were mapping over Jason’s body, so that his eyes didn’t betray him. He frowned when he noticed a long, faint scar running the length of Jason’s side. He traced it, only for Jason to wriggle again. It seemed as if he might be ticklish, and that was definitely something Riley was going to explore later.

“What’s this from?” he asked.

Jason stiffened for an instant, then he relaxed and shrugged slightly. “We had a run-in with another pack a couple of months back,” he said. “It ended up in a fight.”

Holy shit. So all those tales about shifters and violence were true. Except Jason didn’t seem that way at all—he seemed like the sweetest natured, most placid guy Riley had ever met. “You fought another shifter?” he asked, not quite able to believe it.

Jason didn’t answer until Riley raised his eyes to Jason’s face. Then he held Riley’s gaze. “It was them or us,” he said. “They attacked us and wanted to kill us.”

“Fuck,” Riley said, and hugged Jason close. “It doesn’t happen often, does it?” he asked.

Jason was squirming, and Riley realized his arms were like bands of iron around Jason’s ribs. “Sorry,” he said, and loosened his grip. Slightly.

“It’s the first time I’ve known it,” Jason said. “But it does happen sometimes. It’s part of why we patrol our territory every night.”

It was? They did? Riley was beginning to realize he knew nothing about shifters. And he wasn’t sure he really wanted to think of Jason as a shifter, because his gorgeous, long, lean body might feel different to him if he ever thought of Jason in wolf form.
