Tibetan Scholarship

Before turning to Tsong-kha-pa (1357-1419), the next great figure to introduce still further complications into an already complex religious scene, we must summarize literary and religious developments from Atīśa’s arrival in Tibet (1042) until the end of the fourteenth century.

We have written so far chiefly of the Sa-skya and the various bKa’-rgyud-pa orders in so far as they have played an important part in political and social affairs from the early thirteenth century onwards, and now we need to emphasize the change that begins to take place in Tibetan scholarship about the same time. Up to 1200 India still had everything to offer in Buddhist studies, and so in Tibet it was the age of the Great Translators (lo-tsa-ba), such as sKa-ba dPal-brtsegs, Cog-ro Klu’i rgyal-mtshan and Zhang Ye-shes-sde in the eighth century, and after the eclipse of Buddhism Rin-chen bZang-po (see page 113) and Ngog Legs-pa’i Shes-rab in the tenth and eleventh centuries. The last named was a disciple of ’Brom-ston (see page 131) and so is usually considered a bKa’-gdams-pa like his nephew rNgog Blo-ldan Shes-rab, also a translator, and the renowned scholar Gro-lung-pa Blo-gros Byung-gnas. These last two each wrote a general dissertation on Buddhist doctrine (bsTan-rim) which were important for later developments.

We have already referred to the importance of the translator Mar-pa (page 118) and sGam-po-pa, who was in a way the father of all the various bKa’-rgyud-pa
