CHAPTER 16

A ROARING sound filled the air, and a wave of pressure smacked into them. A high-pitched wail, unlike anything Max had ever heard before, caused Max to cover his ears. Down the hallway near Justin’s room, Carson knelt, his tattoos of the ancient writing covering his skin and glowing bright red. He held his head as he leaned over his folded knees.

“Carson!” Lincoln rushed toward his bond mate.

Max followed, terrified that Carson had tried to help and was severely hurt. Even scarier was the thought that Justin would be injured as well. The air was heavy and thick and charged with electricity. The pressure in Max’s head and around his body rose. Looking to the left, Max spotted Dennison in another hallway, trying to hold his gun on the pregnant woman, bent over and clutching her stomach. What the fuck?

Pressure built in Max’s head as he tried to walk, pushing against a force equivalent to hurricane winds. The pain in his head grew. Lincoln was near Carson, probably trying to reach him through their link without success. Carson had to stop whatever he was doing.

“Carson! Stop!” Max shouted, however his voice was quickly swallowed whole by the high-pitched wail. Soon Carson would annihilate them all, and once again take down the building around them. Max didn’t want to die, didn’t want to leave Justin when he’d just found him.

Max forced his muscles to fight the invisible pressure, push past the substantial resistance, and get to Justin. Reaching Justin’s doorway, he grabbed the jamb and pulled himself into the room. The roar was deafening, and nausea roiled Max’s stomach, his head ready to implode. His urgency increased as he spotted Miriam next to the head of Justin’s bed. She wore an odd, shiny black helmet open in the front. Over Justin’s eyes she held what looked like a shortened pair of binoculars. Justin wore only boxers. The bandages on his chest had been removed, the bruising already faded. Movement from Justin caught Max’s eye. Justin’s arms and legs were tied down, but he pulled against the restraints as if he were trying to get free. As if he were awake.

Max needed to get to Miriam, stop her from harming Justin. Miriam’s movements were unhindered by the massive force trying to tear them all apart. Miriam grinned when she spotted Max coming toward her. Trying to get to his gun was useless. Fuck, this slow-motion shit was ridiculous.

Max reached the side of Justin’s bed, opposite Miriam. His chest heaved, his muscles cramped as if he’d run a mile at full speed. If he could get his gun, Miriam was getting a bullet in her.

“Hi, Max. How nice of you to join us.” That cheerful voice was grating. “I’m almost done here, and then we’ll be on our way.” She chuckled. “Justin’s ours. Big plans for him, you know. He’s quite special, and the boss is itching to get him back.” She worked on a laptop on the bedside table. “Just another five minutes, and I’ll have this boy back to the resting state where he should be.
