Chapter Nine
“So are you going to tell me why you and your new data scientist were late coming in to work today, Remy?”
Douglas’s grating voice echoed through the speaker of Remy’s phone. The way he’d said ‘data scientist,’ as though Dylan didn’t have a name, annoyed Remy even more than words could say.
And again, not even the presence of his two best friends and the distinct lack of women within the vicinity of Mack’s house were proving to make Remy feel any better. Not even the beautiful interior design, the beer in his hands, or the relaxed feeling of a day well spent at the office helped him where it usually did.
The only thing that seemed to calm him was Dylan. Today’s exchange still made Remy grin, to be honest.
“How will the people in the office respect me if they see me hanging off your arm?” Dylan asked with his arms crossed. He was pouting so cutely that Remy had to resist the urge to lean down and kiss the man square on the lips. Still, Remy chuckled and placed a hand on his chin.
“I’m guessing you’re going to tell me how people in the office won’t respect you at all, and you want to earn their high opinion, or something along those lines,” Remy muttered.
Dylan nodded. “If I want to stay for a long time, I have to show that I fit in with all of you, right? Not just my boss,” Dylan replied. “Not to mention, I still think it might be cause for someone to think I’m just trying to ride your coattails when nothing could be farther from the truth.”
“And what would the official story be, then?” Remy raised his eyebrow. “That we just happen to find each other attractive and you just happen to be my subordinate?”
“Well, that, or we don’t date until the end of my contract with your company,” Dylan said. For the first time in the entire conversation, Remy frowned. Dylan seemed to take notice of this, and he sighed. “But something tells me you might not be into that idea.”
“No. Not at all,” Remy said firmly. “It’s a little unsettling that I’m this fond of you and we haven’t really gotten to know each other. For example, I don’t even know your favorite color.”
“I don’t see how that’s relevant to this conversation!” Dylan chastised him. “Either way, all I’m saying is that I don’t want the office gossip to revolve around me.”
Remy couldn’t bear the thought of telling Dylan that the people in the office didn’t really care who he slept with and they knew better than to gossip about it. Also, they probably already knew.
“I get it. You want to go in, do your work quietly, see where it takes you,” Remy said. “I can respect someone who works hard. As you requested, we’ll come in at different times… even though it would be easier to just say that we came in at the same time.”
Remy always did have a penchant for trying to make things a little lighter when things were uncomfortable for him.
