Chapter 17
“So, what do you do for a living? I’m sorry. I didn’t catch it the first time.”
Phoebe pursed her lips while stealing another sip of wine. Preston, whose elbows were unceremoniously placed on his dining table, cleared his throat. The twins were still in their own world, where salad, garlic bread, and lasagna was the supplement to their endless diet of girl-talk. At least they’re acting like twins now… Sophie and Sophia wasted no time jumping into their own special language as soon as they realized how many adults were around them. Wilhelmina said that there was no penetrating their conversation as soon as that happened… but she would definitely need more wine.
“I’m a yoga instructor over by Slab Town.” Phoebe had no idea if that neighborhood name meant anything to someone like Wilhelmina, who called the more affluent neighborhoods of Salem her true home. “I teach classes there throughout the week.”
“You had to, like, get certified in that, right?”
“Yes. Quite rigorous training. Took a total of a hundred hours, and it’s usually crammed into only a couple of weeks to accommodate the traveling expenses for the swamis flown in from across the country. Or India.” They had both while she trained.
“Swamis?” Wilhelmina almost dropped her wineglass. “You mean like those people from the airports?” She looked to her son. “Are you old enough to remember them?”
“You might be thinking of the Hare Krishnas,” Phoebe diplomatically said. “They are somewhat related, but not the same people you’re thinking of.” She wouldn’t explain any further. Whatever Phoebe said, Wilhelmina would probably misinterpret, even if she didn’t mean to.
“Go on,” Preston interjected. “Tell her what you really do for a living.”
Phoebe would rather die than talk about her romance novels with her boyfriend’s mother.
“I’m an author.” She left it at that.
“Yoga teaching… authoring… it’s amazing what people can cobble together to make a living these days.” Wilhelmina held out her glass for her son to top off. “I hear that’s a very Millennial thing. Everyone is a freelancer these days! Makes me glad that my children had plenty of funds and support to get them through college. College is still to come for some of my children.” She shot her twins, currently yanking spaghetti noodles out of each other’s mouths, a dirty look. “Do you know if the Oregon Zoo is taking applications for new animal exhibits? I think that’s in their future.”
She said it so dryly that it took Phoebe a few moments to realize that Wilhelmina had made a joke. When she did, the laughter that burst from her throat was enough to drown out the conversations going on either end of the table.
“She’s dead serious, too,” Preston said, after his girlfriend’s uproarious laughter died down. “She tried to sell me to a circus when I was a kid.”
“You were always climbing your father’s bookshelves and snaking your way up columns and railings… Jesus, I thought your whole future would be in acrobats!”
Phoebe couldn’t help herself. “No wonder he’s such a quick study in yoga.
