Ruby pushed the door open to the clubhouse with her back. She stepped away from the door slowly and let it close. Scanning the room, she focused on the voices she heard. Nova and Cowboy sat at a table talking. She walked to where they were and placed the container she carried onto the table next to Nova.

Nova tilted his head back to look at her. “How you doing?”

Ruby's hands popped to her hips as she stared at Nova. “Why are you out of bed?”

“Headed there now. But I may need some help.” He glanced to Cowboy with a smirk.

Cowboy looked down and shook his head as he withheld a laugh.

“Well, come on,” Ruby told him.

Nova pushed away from the table and stood. He slipped his arm around Ruby's shoulders.

Ruby wrapped both arms around his waist and they began to move toward Nova's room.

Ghost appeared at the bottom of the stairs and headed to the table where Cowboy relaxed. He slowed his pace and watched Nova and Ruby disappear into Nova's bedroom.

“What happened to him? He was moving around fine earlier,” Ghost asked Cowboy.

A laugh escaped Cowboy as he answered, “A woman.”

“Ah, I’d milk it too for someone who looked like her.”

Ruby hurried out of the bedroom and grabbed the dish from the table. She glanced to them both. “You know he needs his rest,” she scolded.

She disappeared back into the room before Cowboy and Ghost both allowed snickers to escape.

“I'm glad to see the swelling down, but please rest and heal,” Ruby pleaded with Nova.

“You sound like you care a little bit, sweetheart,” he teased.

“Just get on the bed and rest. I can read some more today and maybe we can talk. I know I missed breakfast, but I brought some lunch whenever you get hungry.”

She set the dish on the dresser and dropped her backpack onto the chair in the corner of the room. She hurried to help Nova settle onto the bed.

He leaned against the headboard as Ruby pulled a blanket over his lap.

“Have you had your medicine this morning?”

“Don't want any more pain pills.”

“I don't want you to hurt.”

“I'll be fine.” He tilted his head and studied her. “So what are we reading today?”

“History.” She smiled and turned toward the bag in the chair. She unzipped it and pulled out a thick hardback book. Zipping it closed again, she moved the bag to the floor and eased onto the edge of the chair.

“Come sit over here.” Nova patted the mattress next to him.

“You need to sit still.”

“You're not going to shake the bed. Come on.”

Wrinkling her nose, she relented. “Okay.”

Ruby kicked off her shoes and climbed onto the bed, facing Nova, and crossed her legs. She opened the book where a marker was inserted.

“Thought you said you weren't a history buff. Two days in a row you're reading from a history book.” Nova paused and narrowed his eyes at the book. He leaned toward her and tilted the book to view the cover.

“High school history textbook?”

Ruby closed her eyes and nodded.
