The members of the Borodin String Quartet all use first-class Italian instruments, but they are not their own. They are on loan to them from the Russian State Collection as long as they play in the quartet. At the time of this interview, Kopelman’s violin was an Antonio Stradivari of 1710, loaned to him six years after he joined the group, and Abramenkov’s violin a J.B. Guadagnini of 1735. Shebalin played a Lorenzo Storioni viola for 25 years, and Berlinsky’s cello was a Carlo Bergonzi.
