Now of course the tub was not scrubbed and sanitized so the water would not be suitable for drinking right out of the tub.

But it can be boiled for at least three minutes and when cooled be safe to drink.

Also, you should know the size of your water heater (most are in the 30-40 gallon range). This is an often overlooked source of water. What you can do is to assess the situation before you take water from the tank, the tank is usually located in the basement (if you have one) or on the ground floor of the house. At the bottom of the tank is a drain that is used to drain the tank to replace it, also this is used to drain the sediment out of your tank ( you should do that once per year, in the summer is recommended). If you have never flushed your tank I will give you a quick tip in how to do this.
