Chapter Twelve

Richie stirred the milk in his coffee, watching the white swirl into brown. Although he hadn’t officially moved in, Julian’s house had been feeling more and more like home in the last few weeks. He looked up at the television in the living room and shook his head as some pretty woman tried to sell him beer. He sighed and lifted the mug to his lips, taking a slow sip.

As he watched the television, he began to zone again. The room shifted, colors fading to black and white. His breathing grew erratic as heat washed over him, leaving his skin cool and slick with sweat. When the first figure formed out of a gray mist, the mug slipped from Richie’s hand, crashing to floor. Coffee and ceramic shards scattered across the tile as Richie gripped the countertop.

After getting out of the shower, Julian dried before tying the towel around his waist. Leaving the bathroom, he followed the scent of the coffee into the kitchen. He heard the crash and quickly stepped into the kitchen. Seeing Richie’s pale features, he moved swiftly toward him, laying his hand on his shoulder. His first thought was Richie had taken sick, judging from the tenor of his breathing and sticky feel of his skin. Clear signs of panic set in and Richie began to shake. He looked frantically around the room, then at Julian. No recognition was visible in his eyes, only terror.

“Richie.” Quietly, he tried to draw his attention, realizing from Richie’s expression his initial assessment had been wrong. When he got no response to his voice, he unceremoniously picked Richie up, cradling him in his arms as he moved down the hall to their bedroom. Carefully he laid him on top of the covers before he settled in next to him. Richie’s body went limp beside Julian and his breathing slowed to a bare crawl. The features of his face slowly relaxed.

Completely alarmed, Julian’s first reaction was to get Richie to a hospital. He’d never seen this happen to him. Getting out of the bed, he moved to hurriedly dress. A moment later, a scream broke through the haze in his mind and Richie jerked awake, the shrill sound echoing in his ears.

Startled by the sudden sound, Julian whirled around and moved in haste back to the bed. Settling once again beside him, he reached for Richie, drawing him in against him. Julian was thoroughly confused, and held Richie to calm him down. “Richie, what the hell is wrong?”

It took several minutes before the fog in his mind appeared to lift and when it did, Richie turned and clung tightly to Julian, still shaking. “Oh, God… I saw them again, Julian. I saw them when I was awake!”

“Saw what, Richie?” Some of the confusion cleared up as he began to understand Richie must have had a vision. At least Julian knew what to do now. Shifting just enough to pull Richie into his lap, his arms encircled him, keeping Richie very close to him.
