“Designed together” separates including slacks, sweaters, and jumpers, from Montgomery Ward catalogue, fall 1954.

Modernist print cotton skirt, brown leather belt, and cashmere wool-blend sweater set with gold metal sweater clip, c. late 1950s.

Higher clothing costs in the early 1950s inspired sportswear manufacturers to make “designed together” separates: color-coordinated flannel, tartan, and velveteen jackets, skirts, waistcoats, and slacks that could be mixed and matched with a variety of blouses and sweaters for maximum use. Separates were not just for daytime: glamorous velvet and satin skirts and tops for at-home entertaining and cocktail-through-dinner wear became à la mode at the start of the decade.

When full skirts caught on in the United States in 1951, four years after their debut in Paris, the style was most popular as a sportswear separate. Felt or cotton skirts, paired with sleeveless blouses or sweaters and worn with wide, elasticized “cinch” belts (introduced by Schiaparelli in spring 1952), were popular with American women. The skirts ranged from almost straight, hanging pleated styles to full silhouettes with hemlines wider than a circle’s radius, held out by numerous petticoats.
